Summary of the XIVth Congress of the International Society of Dacryology and Dry Eye

The XIVth Congress of the International Society of Dacryology and Dry Eye (ISD&DE) was held in London, UK, from 29-31 May 2024. Ms. Jane Olver, an ophthalmologist and oculoplastic surgeon, served as the president-elect, secretary, and organizer of the event.

The congress featured a Preliminary Update Course Programme designed to disseminate the latest scientific and clinical advancements in dacryology and dry eye disease. This comprehensive programme aimed to enhance the knowledge base and clinical expertise of participating professionals, including ophthalmologists, optometrists, researchers, and healthcare providers specialising in ocular surface diseases and lacrimal system disorders.

Keynote addresses by globally recognised experts provided a comprehensive overview of current research and clinical practices in dacryology and dry eye disease. Major topics included the pathophysiology of dry eye disease, advancements in diagnostic imaging technologies, and novel therapeutic strategies. The event highlighted innovative approaches such as the use of artificial intelligence in diagnosis, the development of new pharmacological treatments, and advancements in minimally invasive surgical techniques.

Interactive workshops offered participants hands-on experience with the latest diagnostic tools and surgical procedures. These sessions included practical skills training in dacryocystorhinostomy, punctal occlusion, and the use of advanced imaging modalities like optical coherence tomography (OCT) and confocal microscopy. Attendees practised these techniques under the guidance of experienced practitioners, ensuring a high level of competence and confidence in their clinical application.

Panel discussions and case study presentations encouraged active participation and debate among attendees. These sessions provided valuable insights into the complexities of managing dacryologic and dry eye conditions, emphasizing a multidisciplinary approach. Topics included the integration of systemic disease management with ocular health, the role of immunomodulatory therapies, and patient-centred care strategies.

A dedicated session on emerging research showcased the latest findings by young investigators, underscoring the Society’s commitment to fostering new talent and innovative research in the field. Presentations covered a range of topics from genetic and molecular studies to clinical trials of new therapeutic agents, offering a glimpse into future directions in dacryology and dry eye research.

The Preliminary Update Course Programme concluded with a roundtable discussion summarizing key takeaways and identifying areas for future research and collaboration. This session facilitated the establishment of professional networks, fostering ongoing learning and partnership.

The XIVth Congress of the ISD&DE in London was a resounding success, reinforcing the Society’s dedication to advancing the understanding and treatment of dacryologic and dry eye conditions. The event not only enriched participants’ professional knowledge and skills but also paved the way for future innovations and improved patient care outcomes.

The event was sponsored by FCI, Thea Pharmaceuticals, Machida, Santen, EssilorLuxottica, Scope, Topcon, and 3-D Matrix, and was held at Clinica London. It featured 34 speakers from 100 different countries.

Full accreditation for the course was awarded by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (13 CPD points) and the General Optical Council (25 CPD points).
